Petro-icons are a visual and contextual intersection of cultures, artistic movements, history, and modernity. The symbolism of the petroglyphs is mixed with the motifs of key religions, iconic urban landscapes, masterpieces of classical art, or examples of contemporary pop art.
The Tamgaly petroglyphs (Kazakh - Таңбалы) are a monument of rock art from the 14th-13th centuries BC, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The archaeological complex of Tamgaly is located 170 km from Almaty, in Kazakhstan. One of the key elements of the graphics is the “sun-headed” deities, probably related to the cult of the sun.
I use the technique of linocut, recreating famous or iconic images of classical or modern art, integrating the Tamgaly petroglyphs into them.
